How to Differentiate Poker Types

Poker refers to a family of different card games which share similar hand rankings and betting rules. There are different poker types/ variations available including seven card draw, straight, Pai Gow, five card stud and the well known Texas Hold’em poker community. These poker games differ considerably especially when it comes to betting rules, the formation of hands and the dealing of cards in the game. According to many poker players, the main different between these poker games is their differing betting system which also differentiates them from other kinds of gambling. Apart from the small forced bets that players have to make at the start of a hand, many bets in poker games are made by the players willingly. They assume that every bet placed is expected to win.

The original variation of poker is the straight poker. This poker type involves use of set of playing cards, which could be 3, 5 or 7. These cards are dealt in one round to every player with face down and the players bet in rounds. Even though hands in straight poker are fast and fun, most poker players prefer variations that are more complex that allow use of increased strategy and skills than the straight poker. The stud poker is another variation where the cards dealt to players are a prearranged set that include face down and face up cards. Betting rounds can be one or more. The seven card stud resulted as the cards were being switched from 3 to 5 card hands. Seven card stud involve playing with four cards facing up and three cards facing down and players aim at making the best hand of five cards after betting several times.

Draw poker on the other hand involves dealing the players a complete poker hand and players try to trade in cards as a way of bettering their hand rank. Then, another betting round starts and showdown in draw poker starts. This is how the well know five card draw poker is played. Each player gets a complete hand and can trade in between zero and four cards as they attempt to better their 5 card hand. Community poker is yet another type of poker which involves use of both hands dealt individually to each player and then a community of cards facing up is dealt which can be used by all the players as a community in order to form the best hand possible. Texas Hold’em is the most well known variety in this category where every player gets two face-down cards and 3 community cards are provided facing up.

Omaha Hold’em is yet a very popular poker game played at casinos and this game also has many variations as well. Pai Gow is also becoming more popular nowadays where the players bets against the dealer and hopes to beat him in order to claim the win. There are other poker types played at casinos but are less popular such as strip poker and hi lo.
